I'm glad that schools like Toukai Dai-yon and Hokkai have made the finals, but as we've seen it took a special team in Komadai Tomakomai that could win the whole thing (and that was pre-Tanaka!).and barring a special performance the result was pretty much expected.

And in a way, that's kind of sad. Sure, like the NCAA tournament in general the best of the best are generally going to get to the final stages. But Koushien has always been pushed as a tournament that any team can win - and there are some cases where that happens. More often than not though it's a school like Osaka Touin that wins and while that may do it for most, it doesn't for me.

Now, I guess while Sakushin Gakuin has been a mainstay, the fact that they hadn't won since 1962 (when they won haru-natsu, aka spring-summer), and the young Kobari-kantoku who is just 33, has quietly turned Sakushin Gakuin into a powerhouse in the last 10 years (yes, he was 23 when he became the manager) is something to be lauded - though be careful of becoming the Osaka Touin of the East. Well, to me be careful, to the rest I'm sure they love it.

As for the rest of the tournament, there are continued signs that managers are getting it and are taking into account strategies that should have been implemented a while ago. Not bunting, running through 1st base for the simplest stuff. Managing pitcher's innings (when possible) as an example of more egregious behavior that is changing.

But for all the good that may have happened, what I will remember is Kousei and Shuugakukan...

Where the heck do I even start?

I guess Kousei first. Kousei was one of the exceptions of a private school who had done well that I rooted for, if nothing else because they were from Aomori, and in that stretch where they lost to Nichidai-san and Osaka Touin in 3 straight calendar finals they deserve to get one of them. Just one.

But after the managerial performance by Kosaka-kantoku this tournament, I refuse to root for them until he is replaced.

Against Touhou, having just scored 3 in the 7th to go up 9-2, Kosaka-kantoku sends in ace Sakurai to close the game out. Seems simple enough. He wasn't all that great in the end against Shiritsu Amagasaki but with a 7 run lead it should be fine.

Except it wasn't. He gave up 2 runs in the 7th, and then in the 8th gave up 1 more. So from 9-2, it became 9-5. And by this point, I'm basically saying either Sakurai needs to be replaced right now, or if he gives up a run in the 9th.

Not only does Sakurai not get replaced, he gives up not 1, but 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th as his team blows a 7 run lead - and you could see it coming from miles away.

No matter how you look at it, the loss falls squarely at the feet of Kosaka-kantoku. If Sakurai was the last pitcher available, that's on him for getting to that situation where he had no other options available, especially since he wasn't dominant and he faltered late against an average to below average team. If he left him in there because he's the ace, then that is on him for sticking to old traditions that need to die a fire. Either way Kosaka-kantoku should be fired for complete mismanagement.

And then there's Shuugakukan. From fellow followers, apparently they were a very polarizing team and I can see why. They had 4 above-average pitchers on their staff. Most teams would just like to have 1 bona-fide ace, but they had at least 4 above-average pitchers on their staff. With that you can manage innings, have the flexibility to go to someone else if one struggles, and be a front-runner to win a tournament. You'd think that managing the bullpen could be so easy, a caveman could do it.

Too bad Kajisha-kantoku apparently isn't a caveman.

Facing Hokkai in the semifinals, this should have been a cakewalk (sorry Hokkai, but it's the truth). Starter Kawabata came in and got out of 2 manrui situations. Bottom 2, Kawabata was due up in the order. He had thrown the most innings out of all 4, and could be forgiven if he needed extra rest even with the sharing of duties. Kajisha-kantoku had the perfect opportunity to PH for Kawabata, send in one of your other pitchers to start the 3rd having gotten away with murder basically, and work on winning the game.

Instead, Kajisha-kantoku leaves him in to hit and sends him out to start the next inning. And only after he lets the first 2 runners on, and get 2 outs does he send in Nakai. And he proceeds to give up a bases-clearing triple. After that it's all downhill from there because even though Arimura and Taura eventually stabilize the situation, they're a lighter offensive team needing to stage a comeback.

His strategy in the 3rd smacks one of ill-planning and panic instead of an actual strategy. If Kajisha-kantoku was perhaps trying to walk the tightrope as long as possible when he didn't PH for him in the 2nd, then he has 1 of 3 options:

Replace Kawabata when he walked Satou Taiga to start the inning. Having survived 2 "dai pinchi", you give Kawabata one last chance to work with a clean slate. At the first sign of trouble, you pull him since his luck absolutely can't last forever.

Stick with Kawabata with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd. Now, this strategy I've actually frowned upon because I always think that kantoku's run with a pitcher too long and by the time the P has been replaced, it's too late. HOWEVER, since this is the prevalent thinking, he wouldn't be faulted (by the media) if Oonishi had gotten a hit off of Kawabata instead since Kajisha already proved he was sticking with Kawabata through the 1st and 2nd innings. This despite having 3 other pitchers available. (By the way, this makes the least sense, but could still be "explained" away)

With Oonishi due up, send in Arimura to replace Kawabata. Nakai, Taura and Kawabata are all lefty pitchers, with Arimura the only righty. If Kawabata can play the field with any level of competency, you play the matchup with RH v RH by sending in Arimura, then you can send Arimura to the field to come in when necessary to face a dangerous RHB.

Instead, he doesn't do 1, doesn't stick the the plan to do 2, and when he does 3, he sends in another lefty which doesn't make sense at that moment. Would they still have given up runs if any of the alternate scenarios were run? Sure. But instead, he apparently panicked, cost his team runs, put them on their back foots and in an uncomfortable position to stage a comeback.

And what seemed like a fairly winnable game turned into a big fat "L", with Kajisha's surprised face burned into my memory and I wish I could just burn that.

For complete mismanagement of a dream pitching staff, Kajisha-kantoku should have been fired right after the game and made to find his own way back to Kumamoto.

So yeah, those two games are the things I will remember the most. Well, that and Chuukyou's no-hitter turned loss, and there's not much else to say on that other than just feeling bad for them.

Now the page quickly turns to the Aki taikai and potential qualification for next year's haru koushien. With me getting up in age (though yes I'm not THAT old), and my current semi-unstable job situation, I may need to reevaluate how I do things going forward. There may be some developments in the near future as to my coverage.

Sakushin Gakuin and Hokkai, 2 well-known names, but one perhaps not known for going far. Hokkai played one of their best games yesterday, they'll need an even better one today - especially from ace Oonishi.

Sakushin Gakuin may just need to avoid making major mistakes that have felled other teams. Provided of course Imai holds up the whole game. He got some much needed rest, but he's still on his 4th game in 5 days and the signs of fatigue are already there.

I want a competitive game first and foremost. A blowout would just be such a downer at this point.

14:00 - First pitch

4 pitch walk to Yamamoto, 1 more to Yamanoi before he swings on obvious ball on a hit-and-run. Yamanoi swinging to the benefit of Oonishi as he hits into a 6-4-3 double play.

But now Oonishi hits Kobayashi, bringing up the dreaded Irie. Except that he strikes out on a slider away from Oonishi!

Hokkai's first inning also sees Imai struggle a bit on the mound. the difference is that Hokkai is trying to get their knocks off of Imai as opposed to Sakushin trying to get on base against Oonishi. Kanno gets a 1-out single, but it's 2 groundouts thereafter. We even saw cleanup hitter Taiga show a bust-and-run method presumably in an effort to make contact.

That even continues into the 2nd. Kawamura draws a walk, and after a bunt, Gehou shows bunt but ends up chopping one back to Imai.

Oonishi draws the 2nd walk of the inning, bringing up last batter Suzuki.

And he slices the first pitch down the left field line... FAIR! It's in for a base hit and Kawamura scores to give Hokkai the 1-0 lead!

Sakushin Gakuin tries to find a response. Yamamoto sneaks one past Yuuki and Ono can't chase it down as it goes into left. He's able to take 2nd on a stolen base but Kobayashi grounds out to short.

They also now make a change sending in #16 Suzuki for LF Ikari. Not sure why.

Also, the top of the Hokkai order really wants to get after Imai, but all they get instead is 3 quick outs. I don't think that's what they need. Imai though uses it to pump in a 152 kph fastball. That's nice, but that doesn't equal a win.

What does is a leadoff walk by Irie. And then Oonishi leaves one fat in the strike zone and Fujino crushes it to center. It bounces off the top of the fence for a double.

Walking new LF Suzuki isn't a bad thing as it creates a force, but Hirakawa-kantoku calls for time.

Shinozaki with a chopper up 1st base line, Kawamura charging, but it goes under his glove! Kanno backup but everyone's safe and we're tied at 1-1!

Ayugase with a base up past Oonishi and into center! Sakushin Gakuin leads 2-1!

Imai with a single to right, that brings in one more. 3-1 and it looks to be the end of Oonishi, for now anyways. #11 Tama comes in for Fuse and takes the mound. Oonishi goes to LF.

But with no outs, it'll be really difficult to avoid giving up runs. Yamamoto makes sure of that with a hustle double to right, making it 5-1.

Tama gets 2 outs before having to face Irie, He doesn't back down either, giving him nothing to hit and eventually walking him to load the bases. Fujino grounds out to end the inning, but I'll need to see some type of response from Hokkai to think they stand any chance.

And there is a little life. Tama, in his 1st AB at Koushien singles to left. Gehou on the next pitch lits a sinking liner to left, but the defensive replacement Suzuki makes a great diving catch! That kills the rally, though thery're at least getting good contact on Imai.

Unfortunately it may not matter as Hokkai continues to fall further behind. Suzuki lays down a bunt and beats out a surprised Tama. Shinozaki on hit and run singles to right.

And then on Imai's AB he strikes out on ball in dirt. When Taiga goes to throw to 1st, Suzuki comes home and is safe to make it a 6-1 game.

With Hokkai still a mess at the plate, the game looked over before, but seems for sure now.

As a result, the rest of the game is just a victory procession for Sakushin Gakuin. The result not in doubt anymore. Sakushin Gakuin adds on a run, but the game ends 7-1.

Sakushin Gakuin is still the only team from Tochigi to win either Haru or Natsu Koushien tournaments having won both in 1962. Hokkai is the runner-up, the 2nd runner-up for a Hokkaido school in either tournament in as many years. I wish I could say it's because Hokkaido is getting stronger, but I don't think I could. Still it's a good thing for the region, reasons aside. Don't count out Clark Kokusai either now that the Komadai Iwamizawa kantoku is now there.

And so as the closing ceremonies take place, we close the curtain on another Natsu Koushien tournament. We saw things that we're used to seeing, some things that were new, some things that should never had happened, to things that we were glad that did. The game continues to change in Japan for better or worse. For me I can only hope that the idea of any team getting to Koushien can continue to hold.Goro Shigenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13780997342300576882noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6562979641737696495.post-83774150535875954182016-08-20T13:02:00.000+09:002016-08-23T01:16:35.401+09:0098th Natsu Koushien - Day 14, Semifinal 2 - Shuugakukan (Kumamoto) v Hokkai (Minami Hokkaido)I have to admit, since I wasn't able to do my normal things before the Koushien tournament this year, I never got to see that Shuugakukan has not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 possible starting pitchers who can throw upper 130s at the minimum.

And we have seen all 4 pitchers at some point in time:
#1 - Arimura Taisei (140 kph) - 2 G, 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 2 BB
#10 - Nakai Yuusuke (141 kph) - 2 G, 6.2 IP, 0 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 1 BB
#11 - Taura Fumimaru (141 kph) - 2 G, 1 GS, 7.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 3 BB
#12 - Kawabata Kento (141 kph) - 3 G, 2 GS. 10.2 IP, 1 ER, 13 K, 2 BB

That's just ridiculous. I've NEVER seen a team with that much good pitching. And with 3 of them splitting time, it's hard to think that any one of them is completely empty in the tank. "Ace" Arimura has had the least amount of work. and you have to figure he'll see some extra time with just 2 games to go. And if one struggles, you have options - actual options.

The only weakness, and we saw it last game, is their offense. Despite scoring 4 runs last game, it was on just 5 hits. And they only drew 2 walks to boot. There are 2 batters who have been consistent - SS Matsuo Taiga and LF Amamoto Kousuke who have gone 6-13 and 7-10 respectively, but the drop in hits is concerning as that does leave less room for error on the pitching side, though they have options.

Hokkai is by far the underdog in the matchup. They barely survived against Matsuyama Seiryou, defeated an average Nichinan Gakuen team, and somehow were the team to finally defeat a weaker Seikou Gakuin.

Ace Oonishi will probably be in hot water all night, having pitched all innings so far for Hokkai. His K/BB rates have improved of sorts (6/6, 3/0, 6/2), but I can't imagine him having the same success against this lineup, especially having given up 3 runs in his last outing.

Offensively the one person who stands out is 1B Kawamura who is 5-11 with a HR. The team is batting around 0.333, but against this pitching staff you have to imagine that won't last.
____________________________________________________________

13:05 - First pitch

It's an active first inning for Shuugakukan. Matsuo triples to right center, Harada walks. He then gets thrown out at 2nd, Oonishi uncorks a wild pitch, but they recover to throw out Matsuo at home. Kimoto singles to right and finally Amamoto saves extra bases when he lays out for a shallow liner to left.

All that for no runs.

Meanwhile Ono draws a leadoff walk off Kawabata. 2 outs now, and Taiga hits a ball hard at 1st. Kimoto blocks it in front of him, but stumbles, looks to toss to 1st but Kawabata is nowhere to be found! That continues the inning, runners at the corners, no wait, now manrui after he hits Kawamura and where is the rest of the pitching staff?

He gets fortunate when Fuse hits a chopper to the left side. He fields it, and throws to 1st for the 3rd out.

Kajisha-kantoku has a chance to relieve Kawabata by PH for him int he 3rd, but he doesn't...

Come the bottom of the 3rd it all finally bites him in the ass. Kawabata gives up a leadoff walk and a base hit. After getting 2 outs, he is finally relieved by #10 Nakai, but it's with runners on 2nd and 3rd.

And you knew the good luck wasn't going to last. Oonishi drives a ball to the right center field wall for a bases clearing triple. After that, Hirobe throws wide to 1st on a grounder.

0-0 becomes a 2-0 deficit, becomes a 3-0 deficit.

If Shuugakukan goes on to lose this game, it is WORSE than the Kousei loss because he had 3 other competent pitchers available and failed to go to ANY ONE OF THEM. Any team would kill for 2 above average pitchers, Kajisha-kantoku possibly has 4. 4!

He should be fired on the spot and have to find his own way back to Kumamoto.

Anyways, the game basically continues with one way direction all pointed at Hokkai. They get 1st 2nd with one out in the 4th, thanks to an error, then in the 5th, gives up a leadoff walk and after a fielder's choice, gives up singles to Ono and Kanno for a 4-0 game as we hit the break.

Never expected this.

Top 7th, Shuugakukan gets their best chance yet to score. Kuki doubles to right center. Amamoto singles through the left side for runners at the corners.

Yet Hirobe flies out to shallow center. Horie check swings into fair territory and is out 2-3. Then, Kajisha-kantoku PH for Arimura... with his last P #11 Taura!!

A wild pitch gets a runner in for 4-1. Taura for his part walks. But Hanjyou grounds out to 2nd and 1 run is all they get!

And then one major error makes this a game. 2 down, Matsuo on 2nd thanks to a HBP. Kuki with a base hit to right which might score 1.

Until the ball somehow gets past Gehou's glove... and all the way to the wall.

In shades of Waseda Jitsugyou-Kanzei, Kuki makes it all the way around and beats the throw in. We have a 4-3 game.

I REPEAT, WE HAVE A 4-3 GAME.

Now, Hokkai would go quietly in the 8th, leaving it all to Shuugakukan to make one last run.

But the bottom of the lineup was due, a 6-9 part of the lineup which to this point was 1-11...

Hirobe grounds out to 3rd...

Horie grounds out to 2nd... Last chance in Taura...

Chopper to short, throw to 1st... safe!! Taura's slide doesn't cost him as he still gets in ahead of the throw!

Up to Hanjyou...

Chopper to short again... throw to 1st... GAME SET!

There is no comeback, Hokkai holds on for a 4-3 win!

Hokkai almost gives it up in bizarre circumstances but they prevail. Shuugakukan's run at a title is short circuited, but not because of the players, it is because of Kajisha-kantoku not utilizing his entire pitching staff. A pitching staff that mind you any manager would kill for. 4 viable pitchers.

And yet, Kawabata was the one most used, and perhaps the one most likely to be pulled at any sign of trouble. Except he wasn't. He was left in to endure two manrun situations and was only replaced when again there were runners in scoring position. He was left in when you could have lifted him for a PH after struggling for the 2nd straight inning.

None of that happened. And as a result, they were in a hole they could never get out of.

This loss is worse in my opinion because Kajisha-kantoku obviously had options and failed to use them. This when it seemed he had managed it well to this point.

They could have won the championship. They instead are going home.

Hokkai will get their chance to be the 2nd team from Hokkaido to win Natsu Koushien. But it will not be easy. They will need the same patience they showed today against Imai tomorrow. And Oonishi will probably need to pitch the game of his life.
Best 4, 2 games, 18 innings (minimum anyways) to the title. And perhaps in an oddity, we have teams from all across the country. First up are the central teams, Sakushin Gakuin and Meitoku Gijyuku.

Sakushin Gakuin in terms of competition probably has the strongest resume having defeated 2 Kanto schools. Ace Imai has pitched all innings so far, posted the following lines:

8/12 vs Jinsei Gakuen - CG SHO, 5 H, 13 K, 2 BB

8/18 vs Hanasaki Tokuharu - CG, 2 ER, 6 H, 10 K, 4 BB

8/19 vs Kisaradzu Sougou - CG, ER, 6 H, 7 K, BB

Now, there were signs that Imai perhaps was reaching the end of his tank against Kisaradzu Sougou. If not for them running themselves out of innings, it's possible Sakushin Gakuin isn't here now. Now, he was pitching on back-to-back days, so it can be understandable. But, he's only got one day to rest before this game - how much he's got in the tank will be key. He might be able to get through this game, but the final could be another story.

Offensively, it's all about SS Irie. He's hit a HR in each game so far, joining a very short list of players to do so:

1979 - Kagawa Nobukyuki (Nami Shougyou)

1985 - Kiyohara Kazuhiro (PL Gakuen), Fujii Susumu (Ube Shougyou)

1990 - Matsumoto Kengo (Ube Shougyou)

2001 - Harashima Masamitsu (Nichidai-san)

2008 - Hagiawara Keigo (Osaka Touin)

He's 6-12, with 5 RBIs, 0 Ks and 1 BB. If I were Meitoku Gijyuku, he would not get a pitch to hit, no way no how. This especially since the bottom of the Sakushin lineup is a combined 6-30! Walk him and take your chances elsewhere.

Meitoku Gijyuku I had written off as one of the weaker version of this team. And while they are here in the best 4, they were fortunate to have one of the weaker schedules, defeating Sakai who had a long absence between appearances, and Kadena who were first timers. The only win they could hang their hat on was Naruto, who in the round prior defeated Chiben Gakuen.

The team has used predominantly 2 pitchers, ace Nakano Yasutoshi and #10 Kanatsu Tomoyasu. Neither though are all that dominant. The Naruto game aside where Nakano struck out 8 and walked 3, the pitchers combined for just 5 K's and 4 BB's in 17 innings of work. Now, they did yield just 12 hits in the three games they worked, but if you look at their results as a whole, including their loss in the spring to Ryuukokudai Heian, and you have to have reservations about their staff, successful as they have been.

Offensively, the team's been all over the place, but the one seemingly consistent batter is C Koga Yuudai who is 7-12, but with just 1 RBI. This despite the fact that he has batted 5th, and then last game 4th in the lineup.

It's still hard for me to believe that Meitoku Gijyuku is a contender, even here in the Best 4. I still expect Sakushin Gakuin to reach the finals provided that Imai isn't gassed.

10:03 - First Pitch!

Nakano certainly not blowing by hitters, gets a bad break when Yamanoi's grounder to 1st is missed by Nishiura and deflects past Imai into right. Yamanoi steals 2nd, leaving 1st open, and Nakano doesn't give in, doesn't give Irie a pitch to hit and walks him instead on a 3-2 pitch inside.

The 2nd out comes when Kobayashi hits a dribbler to the right side. Imai's only play is to 1st, but a base hit could score 2. That job is for Fujino now and he's certainly battling, taking a 1-2 pitch just outside, and then barely making contact on a similar pitch.

Makes contact! Down the RF line... FAIR!! It's just fair as both runners will easily score! Fujino at 2nd and Sakushin Gakuin up 2-0! Nakano tried to jam him inside, but Fujino gets the bat in front and makes a great timely hit!

But come the bottom of the inning, there are immediate concerns. While Imai strikes out Tachibana to start off the inning, the control seems to be lacking. And in fact he walks Nishimura.

Nishiura takes some time to come out for his AB as his foot was stepped on on the final play of the top of the 1st. His response is to attack the first pitch and drive it down the RF line foul.

But instead Mabuchi-kantoku calls for the hit-and-run! Nishiura on a 1-2 pitch lines a single to right, and it's runners at the corners for Meitoku Gijyuku! Throw in another walk to Koga and it's manrui, one out!

1st year Taniai has a chance to bring his team level.

He get a fastball down the middle, but it's a grounder to short! He runs to 2nd for 1, throws to 1st... and it beats out a diving Taniai! 3 outs! Imai survives the 1st, but he'll still have 8 innings to go...

Bottom 2 and Ookita not getting message. He's swinging away and flies out to right. Takamura though does stay patient and gets a walk, that's Imai's 3rd BB already. Imai showing bunt, but while the bottom of the lineup is struggling you can't give a struggling pitcher outs.

And he does swing! Grounder back up the middle! AH! Yamamoto makes a great diving stop! Tags 2nd for 1, throw to 1st... not in time! But an excellent play by the SS!

Nakano does his best at the plate, but eventually Imai strikes him out looking and the side is retired.

Now, Sakushin perhaps recognizing the situation they're in, are going for it. Yamamoto single to right bobbled by Taniai (who's not having a great game so far) and Yamamoto takes the extra base. Yamanoi singles to right and it's runners at the corners.

Irie still doesn't get his HR, grounds to 2nd. Imai can't get the ball out of the glove and as a result can only get the runner at 2nd while a runner scores. 3-0.

That failure proves costly. Kobayashi hits a fly ball to right, Taniai goes back, but misplays the ball and it's off the wall. Irie had to hold up thinking it was caught and ends up only at 3rd. Not a good game for Taniai...

And now Fujino with a ball deep to left center, and that's off the wall. Both runners score and it's 5-0.

Meitoku gets one of those runs back when Nishimura booms a HR off Imai to left. 5-1.

Nishiura gets hit, and Koga gets a fastball middle and gets a base hit the other way. 2 on for Taniai.

But he takes just one pitch outside before attacking a similar one and popping out, essentially killing the rally.

Sakushin Gakuin snuffing out any possible resistance left goes back to back doubles by the bottom of the lineup no less to start the 4th. Toss in there a couple more hits from Yamanoi and Kobayashi and you have an 8-1 ballgame and Nakano KOd.

And almost to add insult to injury Fujino lines a ball right at new P Kanadzu and he has to basically use survival reflexes to not get a ball planted in his face.

Meitoku gets a run back thanks to an error and sac fly, only to see that evaporate immediately in the top of the 5th with a triple for Shinozaki and a sac fly of their own. 9-2.

Sakushin continues to add runs with 1 in the 6th, while Imai is relieved and sent into the field which is really smart given the score. #10 Ugajin comes in to pitch.

Now, Ugajin does put the bases loaded with 1 out yielding 3 straight singles, but he comes right back to strikeout a game Wakiya on a slider inside, then Ooktita gives a ball a ride, but falls short of the warning track.

The game finally winds down with Irie of all people taking the mound, throwing low-mid 140s heat. and a mid-120s slider. Sakushin Gakuin cruises to the final with a 10-2 win.

And it seems inevitable really. I never though Meitoku Gijyuku was a contender, but in that first inning they could have set the tone if they were to level the score. They didn't and it was pretty much over from there.

Still, they got to the Best 4, easy road or not. Give them credit for getting here, but it was about as far as they were going to go.Goro Shigenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13780997342300576882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6562979641737696495.post-2635141959694746482016-08-18T15:50:00.000+09:002016-08-18T17:47:53.882+09:0098th Natsu Koushien - Day 12, Game 4 - Sakushin Gakuin (Tochigi) v Kisaradzu Sougou (Chiba)Well, 3 relatively non-competitve games so far. Sakushin Gakuin has looked really good so far, and is poised to make it's best run for the title since 2011.
Standing in their way is Kisaradzu Sougou, which has had to survive several low scoring games. The question is if they're up to challenge. Oddly, these teams have not met in the last 10 years.
Well, that didn't take long. 2 outs, Irie up, Hayakawa puts a fastball middle-middle, and Irie takes it out to left center. 1-0.

Outside of that HR though, both Hayakawa and Imai are basically sending the batters home without supper. Though for Hayakawa it has to be concerning that through 2 all balls hit into play are fly balls.

Oh boy... I write that and right after Hayakawa walks Yamamoto, Yamanoi is the next to take Hayakawa deep, this time to right. 3-0 Sakushin Gakuin...

Imai on the other hand has not had a putout in the outfield through 3 innings. A total contrast of results so far, and all favoring Sakushin Gakuin.

Kisaradzu Sougou would get a chance in the 4th. Kido collects their first hit on a liner to center. A sac bunt moves him into scoring position, but outside of Hosoda getting plunked, it's business as usual for Imai, striking out Toriumi for the 2nd time and getting Inoue to fly out, again.

They get a smaller chance before the break. 2 down, Oozawa singles to left. After Minemura bloops one for a base hit, it's up to Kido, but he strikes out looking - Imai's 6th in the game - to end the inning.

It really doesn't look good for Kisaradzu Sougou. To win, they'll need to match their entire output so far over the next 4 innings.

Their next opportunity comes in the 7th. Inoue walks to lead off the inning, but by the time it reaches Oosawa, Inoue has only made it to 2nd and there's 2 out. Still, Oosawa is able to pull an outside fastball for a base hit and the shutout is averted, 3-1.

Ah... but the inning ends abruptly when Imai picks off Oosawa to end the inning. The momentum built just fizzles like that and they're down to their final 6 outs.

8th inning, and they've dug their own grave. One down, Koike gets a single. Toriumi follows that up next pitch with a ball deep to left. The 3B coach waves Koike around, but Yamamoto's relay throw home guns him down. Instead of 2nd/3rd, 1 out, you have 2nd, 2 outs. and Hosoda strikes out looking. That's pretty much game there.

And it is. Kisaradzu Sougou provides no resistance in the 9th as they fall 3-1. And really, they can only point the finger at themselves. Getting picked off in the 7th, getting thrown out at home in the 8th. Both were opportunities to draw within 1 or even tie the game. Instead they walk away with nothing against an ace that perhaps was vulnerable.

As for Sakushin Gakuin, they advance, but Imai was certainly under pressure in the late innings. He didn't need to exert himself to throw 152 at the end, and only serves to deplete those reserves just that little more. Yes, they're facing Meitoku Gijyuku, but if your ace struggles any team can be in it.

____________________________________________________________

13:05 - First pitch!

For Hokkai, this couldn't have been that much worse of a 1st inning.

Satou boots the first groundball from Matsumoto, Oonishi hits 2 batters, a wild pitch scores the first run, a shallow fly ball that shouldn't score anyone does because they can't get under it comfortably, and the first base hit scored the 3rd run of the inning. 3-0 Seikou Gakuin after 1.

Unfortunately for Seikou, they were not immune to the ugliness either. Suzuki walks the first batter, walks another batter after a sac bunt, gives up an RBI single to Oonishi, saw 2B Koizumi flay miss his toss to 2nd on a double play, and then Suzuku hit a batter to bring a 2nd run in, making it a 3-2 ballgame.

Oy. You guys are playing for a spot in the Best 4, clean it up would you?

The do for an inning, but Hokkai almost blows it yet again. Oonishi gives up back-to-back singles to Kanou and Suzuki before Satou is able to snag a hot shot from Kamamura, step on 3rd for 1, and throw to 1st for the double play to retire the side.

Instead it's Seikou Gakuin who falters again. 4th inning, Gehou singles. After a failed bunt, Suzuka lays one down and not only does it work, but everyone's safe! And then with 2 down, Sugano singles to right, followed right behind by Satou, each scoring 1 meaning that Hokkai amazingly has the 4-3 lead!

And they add to it! Kawamura up to lead off the 5th and he blasts a ball to right center! The fielders converge and it's gone! Solo HR for Hokkai and they're leading 5-3!!

Saitou-kantoku relieves Suzuki with #11 Suzuki Takuto who walks 2 of his 3 batters and throws a wild pitch. #18 Saitou comes in and immediately Hokkai's Suzuki lays down the squeeze, which works, putting them ahead 6-3, which is where we are at the break.
Needless to say, the game up until this point hasn't been pretty, and with Seikou changing pitchers twice in an inning, it might yet get worse.

Thankfully for them it doesn't get too much worse. They give up a run in the 8th. Problem was, they weren't able to generate many opportunities until the 8th where Kanou hit a double, but got thrown out trying to go to 3rd on a grounder to short. After that, Kamakura hit a double that would have scored 1. Instead PH #16 Nakaya grounds out to 2nd netting the team a donut.

And so Seikou Gakuin goes down to Hokkai no less. Just to be clear, I don't like the school because it has won Fukushima 10 times in a row. But I don't dislike the players. It's not their fault they went to the best school - the only school perhaps - that they may remember to go to Koushien. It's what the school represents that I don't like.
10:40 - First Pitch!

Tachibana getting Meitoku Gijyuku off to a roaring start as he triples to left center. However, none of the next 3 batters can bring him home! Nishimura pops out, Nishiura watches a fastball on the outer edge, and Koga chases a slider for the 3rd out!

Meitoku does get on the board one inning later though. Ookita would hit a one-out single up the middle. Two batters late, Imai would hit a two-seamer left over the plate by Kawano and line it to left. Watanabe's throw is high and that allows Ookita to slide under the tag. 1-0.

Unfortunately I nodded off, and in the meantime Meitoku got hits from Taniai, Takamura and Imai to make the score 2-0. Nakano's grounder to short would have ended the inning but Hino bobbles it and everyone's safe. They get to tack on one more when Kawano walks a run and Naruto is in a bit of a bother down 3-0.

While I nodded in and out, in reality there just wasn't much else to the game. Naruto got just 3 hits and 7 base runners on the day, but at no point did you think Meitoku Gijyuku was in danger. And they had many other opportunities to score though they didn't in the end and it wasn't necessary.Goro Shigenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13780997342300576882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6562979641737696495.post-61106392633627994512016-08-18T08:02:00.003+09:002016-08-20T02:15:14.066+09:0098th Natsu Koushien - Day 12, Game 1 - Jyousou Gakuin (Ibaraki) v Shuugakukan (Kumamoto)Having defeated Riseisha, Jyousou Gakuin has to feel good about themselves, and people have to look at them with a more discerning eye for as a title contender.
08:00 - First pitch

Well, Kawabata gives up a leadoff walk, which could always spell trouble. But he then trades 2 outs for 2 bases meaning Hanawa's groundout to 2nd leaves the runner stranded.

Shouta is also having some of his own issues on the mound for Jyousou Gakuin. Primarily that #3 batter Kimoto hit a line single down the right field line, and then it took a great running catch by Suyama to prevent an extra base hit by Kuki to deep right center.

It actually seems like Kawabata is the better pitcher early. Despite the leadoff walk, he's setting down the Jyousou lineup, even striking out the side in the 2nd with some well located pitches.

And now out of nowhere, Shouta leaves a ball up to Amamoto and he drives one to left! Ishikawa going back to the wall, but it's gone! 1-0 Shuugakukan and this is a bit of a surprise.

Now, Suzuki retires the side thereafter, but it's clear who has the scoring chances right now.

Oh boy...

Shuugakukan doubles their lead in the 3rd when Shouta leaves a fastball middle-milddle and Matsuo drives that to left for a HR! 2-0 Shuugakukan and we may have something on our hands!

I did mention this on twitter that Shuugakukan did beat Seiseikou, Kumamoto Kougyou, Buntoku and Kyushu Gakuin, all above average schools in the prefecture. But what really stands out is that Shuugakukan has possibly 4 viable pitchers they can turn to! Ace Arimura, #10 Nakai, #11 Taura and today's starter #12 Kawabata. That's a huge advantage in late stages, provided they get there.

Which of course Jyousou Gakuin is trying to prevent. And in the 5th they finally get to Kawabata.

First Nakamura gets a 1-out walk. 2 down, with Nakamura on 2nd now from a wild pitch and Shouta despite being relieved, hits a single to left, scoring Nakamura and making it 2-1 before the break,

Shuugakukan uses the break to send in someone from the bullpen, this time it's #10 Nakai, who retires the top of the Jyousou lineup in order.

In the bottom of the 6th it all goes wrong for Jyousou Gakuin. 2 outs, and Hirobe has just hit a dobule to left center. Horie seeming hits a routine grounder to short. but Nakamura has it go 5-hole on him and into the outfield allowing Hirobe to score making it a 3-1 ballgame. And if that weren't bad enough he gets another grounder, tries to go the short way for the out, but throws it in the dirt and it goes into the outfield.

Throw in a wild pitch from Kurata for good measure and Shuugakukan scores 2 runs in the 6th without the benefit of a hit to make it 4-1,

The game seemed in hand, but they gave themselves a scare in the 9th. Nakai would give up back to back ringing singles to start the inning. And even after a 1-out walk to Shimizu, Kajisha-kantoku sticks with Nakai. Only when Nakamura pops out does he send in ace Arimura. Jyousou Gakuin counters with #12 Yoshinari.

In the end though, Yoshinari would not be able to lift the bat off the shoulder as he would go down looking to end the game.Goro Shigenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13780997342300576882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6562979641737696495.post-46607727654765132042016-08-17T15:20:00.002+09:002016-08-20T05:23:23.556+09:0098th Natsu Koushien - Day 11, Game 4 - Nichinan Gakuen (Miyazaki) v Hokkai (Minami Hokkaido)Last Round of 16 game. 15:22 - First pitch!

Well, Nichinan Gakuen not wasting any time. Yoshiga hits a single through the left side. 2 down now and Yoshiga at 3rd, Masuda hits a hard grounder up the 3rd base line and off of Yuuki into foul territory. Yoshiga scores easily and it's 1-0 just like that.

Surprisingly to me anyways, Hokkai would have a response soon after. Bottom 2nd,Taiga leads off with a base hit past Maeda. 2 down and Taiga now at 3rd, Gehou would hit a single to left and there we are at a tie game, 1-1.

I'm actually surprised to see Hokkai having as much success as they are against ace Moriyama. I guess part of it is that Moriyama isn't really firing it in there as he maxes out in the mid-120s. So in the 3rd they have runners at the corners and 2 out, but fail to score. and then in the 4th they get back to back hits from Fuse and Gehou, but when Oonishi strikes out Fuse must've had his signs crossed up because he's stuck in no-man's land and run down for the 3rd out. While they have the advantage right now on offense, they need to be converting these opportunities into runs.

The game hits the break all square at 1-1. Neither ace is completely dominating if you look at strikeouts, but both have managed the game really well as it has zipped along at a quick 50 minutes.

Hokkai would get first crack at breaking the deadlock. Bottom 6, Yuuki whizzes one past Moriyama into center for a base hit. Taiga lays down a bunt, but the Nichinan defense waits for it to go foul... which it never does! And to make matters worse, after a conference, Kawamura lays down a bunt that Moriyama fields, goes to 3rd, only to see the 3B not covering the bag! All safe and it's manrui, no out!!

Now Nichinan gets one of those outs back when Fuse grounds to short. Ishijima goes home for 1, but that's all they get.

And now Gehou grounds to short! Ishijima goes to 2nd for 1, throw to 1st is the double play and somehow Nichinan Gakuen escapes!

However, they aren't immediately able to turn that into momentum for their side, so it kind of sits in the middle while the two teams fight for it. In the meantime, both teams scuffle at the plate.

And then suddenly the run comes out of nowhere. Bottom 8th, Moriyama innocuously hits Sugano. After a sac bunt Taiga drives a ball into the left center field gap! That will score Sugano and it's 2-1 Hokkai!

And then...

Kawamura hits a ball to right, Hamamoto chases after it, goes to the wall...

And it's gone! It's gone! Hamamoto hits a 2-run HR and Hokkai is suddenly up 4-1!!

There would be no coming back for Nichinan Gakuen as Moriyama futilely screams while holding back tears. Nichinan would go down in order in the 9th as Hokkai moves onto the best 8, 4-1.Goro Shigenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13780997342300576882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6562979641737696495.post-60281189517742697452016-08-17T13:27:00.004+09:002016-08-17T15:10:26.376+09:0098th Natsu Koushien - Day 11, Game 3 - Kisaradzu Sougou (Chiba) v Hiroshima Shinjyou (Hiroshima)Headache gone, but not 100%. 13:27 - First Pitch!

I didn't even get a chance to finish putting my twitter post to this blog post when Kido blasted a ball through the hamazake and out to RF for a home run. 1-0 Kidaradzu Sougou.

I thought perhaps it might be another one of those games. Thankfully it wasn't because Hori would shut it down afterwards.

And actually, both aces would shut things down for a while. Hori wouldn't give up a hit until the 3rd when OOsawa would hit a double to right center, but be stranded. Hayakawa wouldn't give up a hit until the 4th when Sugimura would get a leadoff single back up the middle. He would get picked off by Oozawa, and then on a Furukawa walk Tanaka would ground into the 6-4-3 double play.

The difference is while both were recording their fair share of strikeouts, Hori would get a few flyball outs while Hayakawa were almost all on the ground.

Kisaradzu Sougou would get one more chance to add to their lead in the 5th after a leadoff hit, but Hosoda would be stranded at 2nd as the bottom of the lineup would be unable to deliver.

So at the break the aces combined have given up just 4 hits, 1 walk and stuck out 9. At this point, since Kisaradzu Sougou has the lead, the impetus will be on them to get their offense going soon.

The problem is, they're only with 1 of the 4 hits while Kisaradzu Sougou has had runners on for the last couple. There was the aforementioned 5th, the 6th where they got a 1-out single (that was later picked off), and now int he 7th when Toriumi gets a leadoff single.

Later in the inning, 2 down Toriumi on 2nd, Inoue comes through with a base hit up the middle. Toriumi is waved home and the throw not nearly in time. 2-0 and Hiroshima Shinjyou's task gets that much harder.

And while Hori would only give up 2 runs, his team would only be able to muster just 3 hits against ace Hayakawa as they would indeed fall 2-0. A masterful performance by the Chiba ace. And he must continue that because next up will be Sakushin Gakuin!

10:50 - First pitch!

Imai out to show his presence on the mound, pumping in faster and faster fastballs. He strikes the first 2 batters out maxing at 152 kph (95 mph). That's good and all, but you have 8 more innings and 3 more games to go.

As for his counterpart, Tsunawaki won't be mistaken for such a fireballer. Unfortunately he gets into early trouble walking Yamamoto. Good thing though is that he's thrown out trying to steal 2nd. But with 2 down, he gives up back to back line drives to Irie and Kobayashi. He escapes out of the inning, but it appears he might have some work ahead of him...

Hanasaki Tokuharu gets their first hit out of the way quickly after, with Kusumoto hitting a ball to right center and hustling for a double. That's all they get though, but at least they've proven he's not unhittable.

And then we have our proverbial (at least this tournament) big inning. Sakushin Gakuin goes to town on Tsunawaki with singles from Ikari, Shinozaki, Imai and Yamanoi making it 3-0 before Irie blasts a HR to left center. 5-0 and #11 Shimizu enters the game.

(I'm coming down with a headache as well as being fatigued. Will be updating when I can)

Hanasaki Tokuharu does manage to score a run before the break, However, they had runners on the corners with 1 down in the 4th, and manrui with 2 out in the 5th and were not able to score any further to close the gap. There's some hope there in getting base runners, and in Imai's control, but they need to convert these with just 4 innings to go,

Quite predictably, Hanasaki Tokuharu doesn't recover from the deficit, unlike me who at least doesn't have the headache anymore (but I'm still tired as all heck). The spot start hurts them as they fail to win today to make use of resting the ace.

08:00 - First pitch!

<div style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-weight: normal;">

<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">

While I continue to maintain that Seikou Gakuin is one of the weaker teams here, and that they were almost beaten by Clark Kokusai, they're in the Round of 16 with a decent chance of reaching Best 8.

And they're trying to get on the board early in the 1st. Matsumoto hits a single to right, He steals 2nd, then takes 3rd on a wild pitch. No wonder then that Kanou hits a single through the right side and it's 1-0 Seikou just like that.

In addition, remember that until Kousei put in Sakurai, they were doing pretty much nothing. so seeing Suzuki collect a single through the 6-hole makes you wonder if they'll have anything for this game.

Touhou's 1st inning is rather uninspiring as they're routinely retired. But it's still early.

Fuijishima almost gets a clean inning, but walks Segawa on 4 straight, flipping the lineup over. After a wild pickoff move, and a wild pitch, Matsumoto is walked. Clearly Fujishima is laboring on the mound.

Koizumi blasts one to right, but perhaps the hamakaze knocks it down as Matsuyama makes the catch with room to spare.

Bottom 2nd, Touhou finally gets something brewing. Fujishima gets an infield hit that deflects off of Matsumoto. After another single and bunt, Suzuki decides to delve deeper into the lineup and walks Takagi with a base open.

But Rio instead makes him pay with a liner to right. The relay throw is not nearly in time and we're all tied at 1-1!

Seikou quick to reply as Takuto scorches a ball past a diving Konishi down the 3rd base line for a double. Kamakura then singles to center and Takuto is waved home. But Tanaka's throw and Rio's relay is just enough to get the out! That kills the rally and leaves the game tied.

Touhou for their part is making better progress. Hamajima gets a one out single, and while he advances by stealing 2nd, He's stranded there.

However, Seikou is the one who strikes the scoreboard again, this in the 5th. Matsumoto reaches base for the 3rd time in as many ABs with a ball all the way to the padding in left. Suzuki has to chase it down after it ricochets, and Matsumoto is in with a triple. Koizumi hits a deep liner to right, Matsuyama makes the great catch, but Suzuki can walk home to make it 2-1.

They tack on another in the 6th when Kamakura's fly ball meekly drops in between Tanaka and Matsuyama. He reaches 2nd on the miscommunication. Nakaya lays down the bunt and beats out the throw to 1st.

When Nishikawa drives a double to right making it 3-1, that's it for Fujishima. He and Matsuyama switch places. He gives up one more run on Segawa's base hit, so Touhou is now chasing 3 at 4-1. It could have been more as Matsumto hit a hard grounder up the 3rd base side, but Konishi - already playing in - makes a great diving stop and catches Nishikawa in a rundown at home.

The complete lack of sleep last night is getting to me early, but in watching the game Touhou made one last good attempt in the 8th where they quickly scored a run, but couldn't go any further with runners at the corners and 1 out. But the margin of loss stays the same at 5-2.

16:45 - First pitch

And yet, it's Jyousou Gakuin who gets the jump! Yamaguchi leaves one over for Arimura and he drives it to left center for a leadoff double! However, after a failed bunt and a groundout it looks like the runner might be stranded. Yet right after Hanawa walks, Shimizu hits the first pitch to right center splitting the defense! Both runners come around to score and it's a 2-0 Jyousou lead!!

On the other hand, while Fukuda gets on via a high chopper, and he winds up on 3rd with 2 out, Yasuda can't drive him in. It's still early though.

Uh oh. Ishikawa with a line single just off the glove of a leaping Wakabayashi. after a sac bunt Yamaguchi walks Kaito and that'll be enough. Ace Terashima comes in to try and salvage the situation.

Uh oh....

Arimura already with an extra base hit, decides to get one off of Terashima! He drives one to center, and Fukuda makes a quick retreat as he realizes it's over his head!! Both runners score and it's 4-0 Jyousou Gakuin!!

Make that 5-0! Suyama lines another one out of Wakabayashi's reach and Arimura can waltz home!!

Riseisha on the other side of the ledger right now, but it's still early.

And here they come!

Imachi leadoff single to right. 2 batters late Yamamoto singles through the 6-hole. Fielders choice at 3rd makes it 2 down, but that doesn't phase them. Terashima instead singles to center making it 5-1. Fukuda extends the inning with a single, but Kitano grounds out to 2nd. Still, it's 1 run back immediately.

Jyousou Gakuin knows it has to continue scoring - no lead is safe. And so Nakamura lines a ball out of the reach of Yoshikawa and down the right field line for a triple (just).

Ishikawa flies out to left, but not nearly enough to tag on... And Shouta grounds out to retire the side.

Shouta flirts with danger again in the 4th. One down against the bottom of the Riseisha lineup he gives up a walk and two singles to load the bases. Yet given a slider middle low, Fukuda skies it for the 2nd. Kitano their last chance to extend the inning, and he scorches one, but it's right at Hanawa who gets the force at 3rd for the 3rd out!!

Things are not getting better for Terashima. He leaves one over for Miyazato who pummels it to right center for a double. Then on a bunt Terashima fires it high to 1st. A wild pitch brings in Miyazato making it 6-1. They lay down another bunt, Imachi goes to 3rd, but they don't get Hanawa! He's safe!

Nakamura with a safety squeeze?! Hanawa doens't go home so all it does is advance the trailing runner.

But now Ishikawa squeezes! They have no play at home and it's 7-1! Is it officially time to panic?

Riseisha makes one last push before the break. 2 down, Imachi takes an outside fastball the other way deep to left! Ishikawa jumps, but the ball takes a big ricochet off the padding and back towards home! He's in with a triple!

Shouhei hits a grounder to 3rd, and it looks to be the end of the inning, except that Hanawa airmails the throw letting Imachi score to put the deficit back at 5. 7-2.

Riseisha claws another run back in the 6th when Terashima (yes, the last batter Terashima) doubles down the left field line. Jyousou Gakuin happy to take the 2 groundsouts it took to score the run. 7-3.

I made it to the end of the game but am too tired. Riseisha scores one more in 9th, but not nearly enough as Jyousou Gakuin is the one that advances to face Shuugakukan in the Best 8!

The bullpen starts are looking like both sides trying to save their main pitching staff. Inoue goes 2-2 or more against all the batters in the 1st, gives up a walk, but nothing else. Yatake gives up 3 singles, and despite a manrui situation, gets Itou to ground into the 5-3 double play.

It's probably going to be each team on the edge as they ride their Plan B/C options on the mound.

The game is in a constant state of alert as both sides try to ride out their starters as long as possible. This means that both sides are going to have opportunities.

For Naruto, Yatake's time on the mound lasts 2 innings. #12 Ozaki comes in for LF Watanabe to pitch. Yatake goes to his numbered position in RF, and Nakayama to LF.

Unfortunately Obara is hit in the face by a pitch. He has to be helped to the dugout and eventually would not return to the game. But the bottom of the lineup is unable to do anything after injury runner Itou is bunted to 2nd.

Meanwhile, Inoue continues to struggle, walking Takeishi to start the 3rd. He also walks Fuji with 2 down but fortunately it comes out to nothing.

That changes in the 4th. Lead off base hit to Sahara, and then Inoue leaves a ball middle out and Nakayama takes it up and over in left as Nishiyama crashes into the padding for a 2-run HR! 2-1.

I would have expected Inoue to leave the game, but he stays in... and that's a mistake.

He walks Yatake, and the Takeishi. Now back to the top of the lineup, he doesn't get in far enough on Hino and he fights an inside pitch to deep left and over Nishiyama's head for a bases clearing triple and a 4-1 lead. Inoue is finally replaced by #11 Miura, but it may be already too late.

Because on the first pitch Kamata sells out on the squeeze and lays it down successfully. 5-1. Looks like Naruto has played their bullpen to perfection so far.

And then the bottom of the 5th happened.

Nishiyama starts it off with a single to right. He's replaced on the basepaths by #7 Nozaka. Higa hits a ball right to Fuji, but he goes to 2nd and Hino is not on the bag! And no one's covering 1st! All safe!

After a bunt out by Miura, Ishibashi draws a walk to load the bases. That's when Sugiwara hits a base hit through the 6-hole for a 2-RBI double to make it 5-3.

After Ueda is almost hit in the head like his teammate Obara, Shiotani singles to left and that scores 2 to tie the game at 5-5! Itou can't keep it going, grounding into a double play, but we suddenly have a new ball game!

The game is back to it's starting state where each team is still on the edge.

And once again, it appears Moriokadai Fuzoku waits just a little too long...

Miura walks Kamata to start off the 7th. After a sac bunt, a wild pitch moves him to 3rd. Then he walks his 2nd batter of the inning in Tezuka.

Two down, and almost out of the mess Nakayama hits a base hit through the 6-hole and Naruto retakes the lead at 6-5!

Moriokadai Fuzoku tries to respond against ace Kawano who now enters the game to close it out. One down, Sugawara and Ueda both draw a walk. Shiota lines a ball over a leaping Hino, but that meant the runners had to hold until it left the infield, so it's manrui!

And yet Kawano goes and fools Itou on a slider, and on the very next pitch gets Nihashi to ground out to 1st to retire the side!

Once again, that spells the death knell for Moriokadai Fuzoku. Miura still in the game, 2 outs, Hino hits a HR to left center. After that the next 5 people reach safely, scoring 4 more runs and making removing all certainty yet again 11-5.

I was about to write how things would go once again unsurprisingly.

Though Moriokadai Fuzoku, in the manner that they have played this tournament, make one last, and eventual meaningful rally...

Leadoff double and then single by Sugawara and Ueda. Shiotani blasts a 3-run HR to left to make it 11-8. Still, they're 3 runs down.

After a strikeout, Nihashi hits a high fly to shallow left. Everyone converges, but no one gets it! Still, you're down 3...

Then a walk, and then another. Douten runner on base with 1 out, but even still I want to see one more run come in without an out.

And then another walk... 11-9. Douten runner on 2nd. 1 out...

OK. Now we're talking. Now a base hit can tie the game. And you're at the top of the lineup..

But as quickly as I begin the believe express, Ishibashi grounds into the 1-2-3 double play, and the game is over.

We saw it before with a team down 4 in the 9th, but 6 perhaps was a bridge too far... Hey, while I didn't believe until it basically ended, give the kids credit for making the comeback they did. We saw 2 teams basically give up and this team didn't. They still lost, but at least they showed fight.

10:55 - First pitch!

From the get-go Shuugakukan seemed to have the advantage. Yamauchi would walk the leadoff batter, but that would be wiped out when Harada is thrown out stealing 2nd.

In the 2nd inning, Kuki's leadoff single this time is paid off. He steals 2nd, and 2 batters later Hirobe singles off a charging Itou and deflects towards center. 1-0.

That becomes 2-0 in the 3rd as Shuugakukan gets their 3rd leadoff batter on base in as many innings when Taura of all people doubles to left center. While he's thrown out on a failed bunt attempt, Kimoto hits a scorcher past a diving Itou down the 3rd base line for a double. In fact, it's not until the 4th that Yamauchi can retire the leadoff batter.

As for Inabe Sougou Gakuen, Taura was holding them off the basepaths. Wasn't pretty at times, but it was good enough to eventually induce weak outs.

That would change in the 4th though. First Matsuo somehow wiffs on a slow grounder up the middle. After being moved over on a hit-and-run attempt, Taura leaves a cement mixer in the middle of te plate and Kanda drives it to right center for an RBI double. The no-hitter and shutout are gone in one swing and it's game on at 2-1.

Taura would end up being relieved after he hits Fujii and #10 Nakai, not the ace, comes in. He gets the 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and limit the damage.

Post-break the momentum seems to have shifted significantly to Inabe Sougou Gakuen. Bottom 6th, Itou lines a single to left. Kuki's throw to 1st on a sac bunt brings Kimoto off the bag, but Itou tries to press for 3rd, but is easily caught. That proves costly because despite a failed bunt, Kanda almost takes Nakai's head off as it sails into center. It might not have scored it the run, but it would have been manrui. Instead Fujii flies out to retire the side.

Meanwhile Inabe Sougou Gakuen goes to their bullpen. #11 Mizutani comes in for Itou to take the hill, but Yamauchi stays in to play 3B. He gives up a leadoff walk, but nothing else, allowing his team to get back on the sticks.

And in the lucky 7th Watanabe immediately puts Nakai under pressure with a double down the left field line. After a popup and an 1-0 count to Shuugakukan goes with #12 Kawabata. A strange decision mid-AB, but it works as he gets Yamauchi to chase a changeup down and away and then Fukase on a fastball inside!

Come to the 8th and Shuugakukan was pretty much scuffling. However, Matsuo starts off with a single to center. Kimoto hits a ball to short, but Morita fumbles it trying to turn the double play! However, Kuki's bunt is jumped on and Matsuo is thrown out at 3rd.

So Amamoto is swinging away and he lines a single to right! Kimoto comes in to score and Shuugakukan gets a key insurance run! 3-1!

They're threatening for more, and yet Mizutani, seemingly trying to keep his head above water strikes out both Hirobe and Miyahira to retire the side!

And yet, and yet! Inabe Sougou Gakuen continues to fight back! One down, and the top of the order. Okumura takes a curve back up the middle. Miyazaki hits a ball to the 6-hole and while Matsuo runs it down, his throw to 1st is nowhere near in time! And now Kanda lines a single to left! It's too hard to allow Okumura to score, but it's manrui!

Fujii up and he lines a ball to left center! New LF Hanjyou charging in, and he makes the catch! No tag up and there's 2 out!

Kawabata completes the Houdini act as Watanabe pops out to new 3B Matsunari right off the mound!

With that scoring chance gone begging, Inabe Sougou Gakuen collapses in 9th. A leadoff walk to Kimura, a sac bunt, and then a triple from Harada and doubles from Matsuo and Kuki all score a run to put the game out of reach 6-1.

08:02 - First Pitch!

Neither ace is looking particularly sharp to open affairs.

Nakachi gives up a hit and 2 walks to load the bases before getting out of the 1st inning. Nakano gives up 2 singles to put runners at the corners before Chibana grounds into a double play.

Both pitchers have no problems in the 2nd against the bottom of the lineups, but the second time through the top of the lineup is no better for Nakachi. Nishimura gets his 2nd hit in as many AB's, but after a wild pitch and tagup on a deep fly, Aragaki boots a routine grounder allowing Nishimura to score giving Meitoku Gijyuku the 1-0 lead.

Kadena trying to respond as Aragaki takes a leadoff walk. But after a sac bunt and strikeout things look bleak. But with two down and Chibana at bat, a ball gets away from Koga and Aragaki takes 3rd. The throw is high and goes into center, and Aragaki hesitates and then breaks for home. That little wait though costs him as Nishimura fires a ball home and nails him at the plate denying Kadena the run.

After that, Meitoku Gijyuku begins to put it on Kadena.

4th inning, Koga leads off with a single. After a sac bunt, its back-to-back hits which score 1, 2-0. Then 2 batters later Tachibana comes through with a base hit through the right side scoring 2 more, extending the lead to 4-0. Toss in one more in the 5th, when after losing their leadoff double by trying to extend it to a triple, back to back 2-out doubles by Koga and Ookita make it 5-0. That also knocks out ace Nakachi and probably Kadena at this point.

Yeah, the top of the 6th is a disaster as Kadena tries to find a pitcher that can get outs. Either way, there's a manrui HR by Nishiura that's completely unnecessary as they reach double digits in 10-0.

There really isn't much point in reporting the rest of the game as it's garbage time. Nakano should be relieved to save his arm. And he is in fact pinch hit for in the 7th.

There is garbage time runs that are scored, but the game still ends up in a comfortable 13-5 win, though I imagine that the bullpen for Meitoku Gijyuku might be shelved at this point.

15:07 - First Pitch!

As expected Hiroshima Shinjyou is generating the opportunities early. Nakatsuhara gives up a leadoff single to Sugimura, then walks Ryouta. But after a sac bunt, they get an unfortunate break when Tomooka hits it right at Nakatsuhara who looks the runners back.

In the 2nd, it's Furukawa who gets the leadoff single. After a bunt and walk, Furumoto hits into the 5-4-3 double play to retire the side.

As for Toyama Dai-ichi, well, it's more of the same. 3 no-hit innings and counting...

Hiroshima Shinjyou finally gets on the board, but in a weird way. Sugimura gets a leadoff hit, and after a bunt and base hit by Kitatani, Tomooka hits a ball to 1st. Matsui gets the out at 1st and throws to 2nd. Kitatani runs back to stall and Toyama Dai-ichi actually ignores Sugimura and gets the 3rd out despite giving up the run. 1-0.

Toyama Dai-ichi beats their drought of a base hit when Houdatsu drives a ball to center just out of the reach of Kawauchi. After a sac bunt, Iwaki hits a grounder to short, but when Ryouta double clutches, he goes to 1st conceding the run. 1-1.

Hiroshima Shinjyou gets one more crack at a run when Sugimura singles to lead off the 5th, but after a bunt, Kitatani can't get the bat off his shoulder and Toyooka grounds out. Toyama Dai-ichi goes back to their feckless selves.

Toyama Dai-ichi does get a leadoff hit for Mori to start the post-break action, but after a failed bunt attempt, they do it again - and with 2 outs, Iwaki's prospects are poor and he actually fouls out to Furumoto on the back netting.

Hiroshima Shinjyou also seemingly on the offensive post-break. Masanori singles to start the inning. After a sac bunt and a walk, Hori hits a grounder to 2nd, but Iwaki fumbles on the ball trying to tag the runner and everyone's safe. That error would prove costly as Furumoto would hit a ball off the padding in center. It would score two to make it 3-1, but the 3rd stopped at 3rd and then tried coming home, and it was just a mess for the 2nd out.

Next pitch, the TOOTBLAN is complete as Furumoto is picked off 2nd right on the leg.

Eventually Toyama Dai-ichi would collapse in the 8th for 4 more runs to solidify the result. Hiroshima Shinjyou advances 7-1.

There really isn't much to see here. Toyama Dai-ichi got fortunate once, but not twice as they fall in the 2nd round.

12:10 - First Pitch!

For certain Hanasaki Tokuharu with their ace in Takahashi is probably favored. But Hamaya at least in his first game looked well enough to compete, and responded early with routine groundouts and a couple of Ks. Nishikawa did gets a line single to left, but it's been one of the few square-ups the team has had early.

On the other hand though Takahashi has had quite a few baseballs squared up on. Top 1st, both Imada and Oozawa hit line singles to the outfield. Now, they ran themselves out of the inning when Imada was picked off 1st, but you had to wonder if it was just a fluke.

2nd inning, Sekiyama gets a base hit up the middle. After they fail to bunt the runner over, it's Sekiyama's turn to get picked off 1st by Nomoto. 2 innings in a row while you're hitting the ace good? You're not going to get these opportunities forever.

And yet Shounan still gets a chance at a run after Orio is plunked and Kusumoto makes a high throw on Hamaya's grounder, but nothing comes of it.

But if nothing else, Hamaya and his defense are preventing Hanasaki Tokuharu from taking the Shounan mistakes and turning them into an advantage. Top 3, 1 down and Nomoto hits a ball to shallow left. Yoshiuchi charges in, dives, and makes a great catch for the 2nd out.

Now for sure Hanasaki Tokuharu is having baserunners, but not in dangerous situations except for Nishkawa's leadoff in the 2nd.

But once again, Shounan's main skill appears to be to shoot themselves in the foot.

Bottom 3, leadoff single by Imada. After a sac bunt, it's Okazaki's turn to throw a ball to 1st high.

AND YET. When Nomoto tries to catch Imada coming home on a possible squeeze, Kamikuri takes off for 2nd, and...

Well do I need to say?

3 straight rallies killed off by poor baserunning. No need to say it, but they'll certainly regret it later.

Bottom 4th, Orio hits a blooper to left that somehow finds its way between Okazaki and Nishikawa. During Hamaya's AB, Orio takes off for 2nd, but doubles back after he stumbles. He barely makes it back to 1st without being thrown out.

And on the VERY NEXT PITCH, Hamaya drives a hanging slider to left center and to the wall for a double, which scores Orio, 1-0.

Hamaya takes that lead to the break, thanks to 9 groundball outs which have to have frustrated the Hanasaki Tokuharu team.

But post-break, Hamaya finds himself in a spot of trouble. He hits Nomoto, and then with 2 down and Nomoto on 3rd, he walks Okazaki.

Nishikawa then hits a comebacker off of Hamaya's glove. It slows down enough going up the middle that Orio has no play when he gets there. Nomoto scores the douten run to make it 1-1.

And all those runs that could have been come back to bit them here, because on the next batter Kusumoto sneaks one past a diving Kamikuri down the right field line for a bases clearing triple. 3-1.

Toss in another HBP and a single past a diving Oozawa up the middle and the final tally ends up at 4-1.

Hamaya would be relieved in 7th for #10 Hatakenaka soon after walking a batter, but he would give up that runner and one more. 6-1 and if the game wasn't in hand then, it is now.

Shounan scores some token runs late, but the game was never in doubt as Hanasaki Tokuharu advances 6-3.

09:30 - First Pitch!

Both teams going with different pitchers to start the game. Probably in an attempt to save the arms for the home stretch should they get there. Also given who they may be drawing into, beating the other team with as much 2nd tier stuff is desirable.

But in a game like this where neither team is all that great, it really boils down to execution. The team who minimizes mistakes wins. Not like the powerhouse teams where there is some room for error. For these teams there usually isn't.

Judging from the starters used this seems to be the case.

And unfortunately for Nichinan Gakuen, they make the first unforced error in the 2nd inning.

It starts innocuously enough when Kinoshita singles to left. But when Shichino pops a bunt down the 1st base line, no one can get to it to catch it, and then they wait too long to see if it goes foul (which it never does).

After a sac bunt, Kurisu hits a ball to 2nd, but Maeda is anticipating the throw home and whiffs on the ball. That allows both Kinoshita and Shichino to score for a 2-0 Shiritsu Wakayama lead.

Then after a walk to the last batter Hamano (which is a cardinal sin), Kawasaki singles to right making it a 3-0 game and forcing Nichinan Gakuen to send in ace Moriyama.

It was Shiritsu Wakayama's turn to reciprocate in the 3rd.

After Ishida led of with a single, and moved to 2nd. Kurusu then could not find the strike zone at all walking both Nagahara and Yoshiga on 4 straight (and it wasn't even close). However, Nichinan was not able to bring in more than 1 run, and that was on Maeda's sac fly. 3-1.

Now obviously these teams can't execute each time they get an opportunity, but you expect them to do so at some point. And the more you get, the more likely you should be able to convert one of them into runs.

We could see this in the inning following. Shiritsu Wakayama would get a 1-out and a 2-out single from Kinoshita and Okamoto, but with 2 down they needed a hit and couldn't get one.

Nichinan Gakuen actually had a good chance in the 4th when Hagiwara had a double to left center, but was left stranded there by the following 2 batters.

Shiritsu Wakayama wasted a chance in their half of the 4th when after a leadoff hit by Hamano, Yamazaki couldn't lay down a good bunt, and when Kawasaki laid down his, it was successful, but when the ball gets dislodged in a collision, Hamano goes for 3rd and is thrown out.

That tails directly into the 5th for Nichinan Gakuen where with one down Nagahara is hit. After a flyout Kurusu seems poised to get out of the jam. However, his plan of attacking Maeda and Masuda backfires, because without pitching inside, the batters cheat on the pitch. Maeda taking it the other way and Masuda pulled over Shichino's head, both for doubles and both for an RBI tying the game at 3-3.

That's where the game would be at the break where Shiritsu Wakayama has handed the momentum to Nichinan Gakuen. In addition, Kurusu I don't believe has an answer for the middle of the lineup. Should he face them again, he'll be in trouble.

As I had hoped Shiritsu Wakayama goes to their ace Akaba. Unfortunately, he's struggling against the bottom of the lineup. Hagiwara had a routine grounder to short, but Hamano's short hop means Kitajima can't field it. After that was a single by Ishijima.

The contact play was a failure for Nichinan Gakuen as Ishijima went home and initiated the rundown. However, walking Moriyama meant the top of the lineup was definitely going to get involved.

Akaba gets a second key out when he strikes out Nagahara on an inside fastball, but once again Shiritsu Wakayama gets in their own way as Okamoto is called for catcher's interference. a run scores and it's 4-3 with Maeda coming to the plate.

And Akaba walks Maeda making it 5-3. Masuda swings over a fastball down and away to retire the side, but it really looks like they're pitching a bit scared. Almost all pitches were away.

At this point I'm seeing if there's any life in the Shiritsu Wakayama offense. If there's none in the next couple of innings, they're done.

Leadoff double by Shichino is a good start in the 6th, and a grounder gets him to 3rd. However, Akaba can't hit a ball on the outside half of the zone, and Hamano grounds out.

They get another try at it in the 7th when Yamazaki walks but after a sac bunt and a flyout there's quickly 2 down. That's when Kitajima reaches out on an outside fastball and drives it over Hamamoto's head for an RBI double making it 5-4. They're within 1, but need to continue creating opportunities for themselves to possibly convert.

However, in the 8th, after Okamato dumps a ball into left center for a hit, he tries to steal 2nd, but is thrown out by a good margin - killing the potential rally and leaving it for the 9th inning.

Now all Akaba has to do is hold serve, but Maeda-Masuda stand in first. Akaba walks Maeda again, but on the first pitch Masuda grounds into the 6-4-3 double play!

The hard part seems over, but Hamamoto singles to center.

And then to Hagiwara, who may have been forgotten, Akaba pitches one inside, but somehow that Hagiwara is able to send down the RF line for an RBI triple. 6-4 and certainly a key insurance run for Nichinan Gakuen.

And that's how the game ends as Shiritsu Wakayama goes quietly in the 9th. Nichinan Gakuen advances, and with the matchup against Hokkai, could reach the Best 8.

16:45 - First pitch

The revitalized Yokohama squad jumps on Terashima to start. Tobori single, a sac bunt that becomes a fielder's choice when Imachi decides to go to 2nd and loses, an actual sac bunt, and a sac fly from Murata makes it 1-0.

17:12 - Weather delay (lightning/rain)
On a 3-2 count to Terashima in the 2nd, the players are called in. The skies are a dark gray, but it's the chance of lightning that causes this delay.

17:53 - Resumption of play
Well first pitch to Terashima went strike 3 swinging, but it was down and in.

But now Ishikawa looks a bit out of sorts, this when Wakabayashi hits a liner to right for a single.

And there we go.

Still struggling with the strike zone, Ishikawa grooves one in there and Yamamoto blasts it to tomorrow. Actually, halfway up the stands. down the left field line. 3-1 Riseisha.

Yet even more struggles as Ishikawa walks Wakabayashi.

18:01 - Weather delay (lightning/rain)
Umpires are calling everyone in again... No rain this time, just the lightning threat.

Nope, there's the rain. and of the deluge variety.

18:40 - Resumption of play
Well, Ishikawa hits Fukuda and now finally the switch is made. Should've been done after the first delay (even if temporary) like the pros, but it's being done now. Which might be even worse because now it's admitting the mistake.

Kitano the takes the first pitch doubles down the right field line and 2 more come in to make it 5-1 Riseisha.

13:30 - First pitch

The script seems a bit flipped to start the game. It's Kousei that is leading proceedings to start the game. Staring right off the siren when Itou lays down the bunt and beats out the throw for a base hit. He's moved to 2nd and after a walk to Tashiro, both runners advance a base on the K by Masuda.

Hanaoka pays it off with a base hit past a diving Konishi and it's 1-0.

They almost do it again in the 2nd when Takagi gets a leadoff single, steals 2nd and moves to 3rd with 2 down. But this time Itou can't get the timely hit to add to the lead.

Touhou finally musters a response in the 2nd. Fujishima leads off with a walk. Kojima not bunting instead laces a ball to left. Matsumoto's bunt fails as Fujishima is cut down, but Takagi solves that by hitting an RBI single to center. 1-1. Unfortunately, that's all they get as Rio hits into the 1-6-3 double play.

But Fujishima for some reason continues to struggle. 3rd inning, he's just given the tie. And yet, he gives up a single to Itou. A ball up the middle by Tokuda is saved by Rio who makes the out at 1st. But then he hits a batter, gives up 2 singles the second being a 2-RBI variety to Hanaoka making it 3-1.

After Fujishima hits Kobayashi, they've seen enough. Matsuyama and Fujishima switch places.

The best Matsuyama can do is 1 run as he actually walks in a run, but Touhou is in a bad way down 4-1.

Wada would have been well suited to have a quick inning to solidify the lead, but the top of the Touhou lineup wouldn't allow it. Despite getting the 1st 2 outs, Wada leaves a pitch middle and Hamajima doubles to right center. After a walk to Matsuyama, Fujishima at least helps out with the bat, hitting an RBI single to center, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Kousei going to their bullpen here in the 4th as #16 Toda comes in relief of Wada who certainly was struggling. No ace yet, so they're going by committee it would seem.

He doesn't throw hard, but the drop that slider had to freeze Takagi looked sick.

Kousei extends that lead when out of nowhere with Masuoka at 1st, Hanaoka blasts a 2-run HR to the 2nd level in center. 6-2 and Touhou's hole gets deeper.

They almost get some runs back in the 5th. Again 2 down, and Hamajima singles to left. Matsuyama takes a walk, and then a wild pitch sends both runners into scoring position. Fujishima hits the ball hard, but Tokuda is able to make the putout, retiring the side and sending us to the break.

It unfortunately gets worse in the 7th. One down and Hanaoka single to right. A wild pitch and a base hit made it 7-2.

After PH Yoshimura got hit to load the bases, Okumura hit a ball to Konishi. But his throw home was wild and that allowed 2 runners to score. 9-2.

Now ace Sakurai would enter the game and get work in, but it's not good work. One down and Mizuki, Matsyama and Fujishima all get base hits, the latter two driving in runs thanks to some SBs to make it 9-4.

Sakurai is continuing to let Touhou climb back, but there's not much time left. In the 8th he gives up a leadoff double to Konishi, after a groundout, a hard liner by Takagi scores Konishi to make it 9-5.

And in the 9th comes the biggest, most needless, Titanic-size disaster, and I was furious the whole time because it was unnecessary.

Already struggling and should have been relieved, the sequence of events in the 9th went like:

Suzuki single to left

Hamajima flyout to deep left

Matsuyama single through right side, 9-6

Fujishima flyout to shallow center

Konishi line single to right, 9-7

Nakanishi double off of LCF wall, 9-9

Suzuki Rio single to LCF, 10x-9

At 9-6 you had a chance to relieve Sakurai. At 9-7, you STILL had a chance to relieve Sakurai.

But nope, you didn't and Kousei, you deserved to lose. And not the players, but Kosaka-kantoku. That's all at his feet. Every single little bit of it.

10:35 - First pitch

Interestingly, it's Suzuki for Jyousou Gakuin that is struggling out of the blocks. Watanabe hits a fly to shallow center, Suyama charging in, dives, but can't make the catch. It hung up there for so long Watanabe has a double.

However, Suzuki catches a break when Shimizu finds Watanabe wandering too far from 2nd and initiates the rundown for the first out.

But that's doesn't stop Suzuki's early problems. He walks Katou thereafter, then gives up a hit to right to Kitagawa.

Imai hits a ball right back at Suzuki, it glances off of him and to the right side. The defense is obviously not ready and everyone is safe, including Katou at home. 1-0. Making matters worse is that he walks Yoshii to load the bases.

Miyazato stops some extra runs from scoring as he picks a ball destined for down the right field line. He goes to 2nd for 1, but the relay throw back isn't in time. Kitagawa scores and it's a 2-0 game.

The damage is limited to that, but it's a little concerning for the Jyousou Gakuin side.

Jyousou Gakuin trying to make a quick reply. Hanawa hits a ball right at Imai, but it somehow gets past him and into right. E3 puts him at 2nd. Two outs later, Furuta is looking to get out of the jam, but Miyazato singles to left! And when Nishikawa boots the ball, that seals the run. 2-1 Chuukyou.

Suzuki's struggles still continue in to 2nd. 2 strikeouts ironically enough before he walks Watanabe, then give up a base hit, then walk Kitagawa. Manrui!

Imai hits a hard ball, but right at Miyazato who makes the play and leaves all the runners stranded. Suzuki has been fortunate so far.

His team though gives him a hand as Kaito dumps a ball into right for a leadoff hit, and then proceeds to steal 2nd. Now on 3rd with one out, Arimura hits a fly to right and Kaito can waltz in for a 2-2 tie.

Jyousou Gakuin continues to make the most of their opportunities. one down in the 5th, Kaito comes through again with a double to left center. After that Suyama lays down a bunt that Furuta fields, but has no one at 3rd to throw to, so everyone's safe!

To top it off, Katou lays down a safety squeeze of his own! Chuukyou's defense isn't ready and they have to go to 1st instead conceding the run! 3-2!

And in a manner similar to last game, Chuukyou's pitching suffers a similar fate to Yamanashi Gakuin. Afer a leadoff single by Hanawa and a sac bunt, #11 Kodzuru comes in to pitch, but walks Taira. #1 Iwakawa is brought in next, but he hits Miyazato to fill up the bases, and then a grounder through the 6 hole for 2 runs, making it a 5-2 game. Iwakawa strikes out the next 2 batters, but once again the damage has been done.

You toss in 2 more with back-to-back doubles by Shimizu and Shouta as Iwakawa continued to get battered on the mound. 7-2.

The game is pretty much over, though both teams add another run and Chuukyou empties their bench save for #14 Akamatsu (why you don't empty your bench fully I don't know. Even if you wound up forfeiting due to injury you're already lost. Let the kid play). Jyousou Gakuin advances easily 8-3.

08:00 - First pitch

The test for Inabe Sougou Gakuen will be to hold on until they can get to Yamanashi Gakuin's bullpen. Kurio did not show good stuff when he came in, so if hey can hang in there they might have a chance.

Yamanashi Gakuin will be determined to score early and build a big lead to pad Kurio's appearance. With 2 down in the first Chikenji draws a walk, and although Takizawa's grouder up the middle is run down by Kanda, he has no play.

Igarashi flies out to right, but it's a deep right, and the other two outs were flyouts. They're getting on the ball early, so it might be something to watch.

For ISG's part, Okumura singles off Miyashita's glove. But despite a wild pitch to move him to 2nd, Miyazaki flies out, and Yoshimatsu strikes out the other 2. The last one though C Igarashi was holding the glove on 3 consecutive balls thinking they had strike 3. Can't be hoping for strikes, gotta throw them.

Bottom 2 now and Yoshimatsu seemingly with a case of the yips. He walks Watanabe, then Morita. Fukase bunts the runners over (WHY?) to put runners in scoring position.

Fujita hangs in there, but whiffs on a changeup. 2 down, and it's up to Akagi to help his cause.

He hits a grounder to short, but Chikenji fumbles the ball! His throw to 1st is late and Watanabe scores to give Inabe Sougou Gakuen the 1-0 lead!

Akagi is staying in the game by making good misses. If he's pitching inside, he's missing inside, etc. But if you miss too much, I think you know where that is going.

So top 4, Akagi walks Igarashi with one down. Then he doesn't even make that bad of a pitch to Matsuo but while jammed still gets it by Fukase to put runners at the corners. Akagi clamps down hard though as Kobayashi can't pull the trigger on an inside fastball, and Kanda makes a great stop on a ball hit by Yoshimatsu to retire the side.

Inabe Sougou though continues to give chances to Yamanashi Gakuin. Kanda boots a grounder from Hirose to lead off the inning. Akagi seemingly is about to get out of the inning after recording 2 outs, but on Chikenji's grounder up the middle, Kanda boots another one! That's 2 errors now and runners at the corners.

They could survive one extra out, but not 2. Akagi finally makes a bad mistake and Takizawa doesn't miss it. It goes all the way to the wall for a bases clearing double and like that Yamanashi Gakuin has the 2-1 lead.

Surprisingly though, that lead doesn't last long. One down and Akagi of all batters hits a single through the left side. This time it's Yoshimatsu to makes a mistake and Okumura drive it to deep left for a double of his own. The throw home is cut off and we're all tied at 2-2!

Advantage right now has to rest with Inabe Sougou Gakuen as they've basically made it a 4-inning game now.

In fact in the 6th, with 2 down, Yoshimatsu is PH for which means Kurio will be in the game.

For his part though, Kurio retires the side inducing middling contact at best, but you can see some of the control issues there.

Yamanashi Gakuin still trying to jump ahead while they can. Tsuchida finally collects his first hit, a ball just out of the reach of Okumura at the wall for a double. Miayazaki's single to right puts runner at the corners. and Ozaki-kantoku has to call time.

Akagi gets a key out when Chikenji flies out to shallow center preventing any tagups. But then he turns around to hit Takizawa to load the bases.

But in the end, Akagi plays magician and gets out of the jam, as Igarashi grounds into a fielder's choice at 2nd!

Suddenly, it seems like Yamanashi Gakuin has the momentum. Ace Yamauchi comes in in the 8th to relieve Akagi, but gives up a base hit to Matsuo. After a one-out walk, they get a fielder's choice for the 2nd out, but the go-ahead run is just 90 feet away.

Instead though, Yamauchi plays his magic and he just gets the corner on Tsuchida to retire the side!

The game immediately craters in the 8th. Leadoff single to Miyazaki. One down now, Kurio leaves a fastball over the plate and Fujii hits it to deep right for a go-ahead double. 3-2.

It gets really ugly after that:

Watanabe single through left side,

Morita bunt foulout (WHY?)

Fukase walk

Fujita RBI single back up the middle, 4-2

The capper is a slider away that Yamauchi drives over Tsuchida for a bases clearing triple 7-2.

And this being the bottom of the 8th, there is no coming back. Kurio, already struggling in their win before, cannot hold the tie in this game and Inabe Sougou Gakuen is into the 3rd round.

15:55 - First Pitch!

Well, I thought Naruto was going to give Chiben Gakuen some trouble, but early on it doesn't look good. Bottom 1st, Osame gets fortunate on a high chopper up the middle that he outruns for a base hit.

2 down, runners at 1st and 2nd for Takahashi, Kawano leaves a fastball middle-middle and it's taken to center for a base hit, just out of the reach of a charging Tezuka. Murakami helps his own cause afterwards, with an RBI single to left center. Like that it's 2-0 Chiben Gakuen.

Naruto finally gets something resembling a chance in the 3rd. Hino would lead off with a single through the right side. But Kamata's bunt was nowhere near good enough and Hino would be thrown out. He's find his way to 3rd on a stolen base and a wild pitch, but in the end Tezuka would chase after a slider and ground out to short.

The game enters a period of both sides just swinging away resulting in a lot of outs. Most are ground balls and some good plays by the infields. But it's still 0s as both offenses scuffle.

Naruto would finally get a baserunner in the 5th when Watanabe would single to right. It looked like he would be stranded at 2nd again, but on Kamata's grounder to 2nd, Oota whiffs on the ball! That allows Watanabe to score cutting the deficit to 2-1. There might have been more, but Fuji's fly ball down the left field line is caught by a diving Osame who sold out for it.

That's where we end at the break. Chiben Gakuen has the lead but it's been made a bit less comfortable. There's still work to be done, and Chiben Gakuen still not showing it can separate itself from the competition.

And in fact, the momentum still seems to be with Naruto. Tezuka starts with a 4 pitch walk. Takahashi can't handle the throw on a pickoff and that allows Tezuka to get into scoring position. That proves costly 2 batters ;ater when Sahara singles to center scoring the douten run. 2-2.

Chiben Gakuen may be making progress again on Kawano as the first 2 outs are driven fly balls. It winds up being a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th, but it's something worth monitoring.

Naruto looks to put another stick on the board when Watanabe hits a ball down the right field line for a triple. But Takeishi first pitch pops out to 1st. Hino golfs a ball to shallow left, but Osame charging in makes a spectacular diving catch. The indignity of not scoring from 3rd, no out could hurt them.

The game stalls, perhaps like an object going towards a black hole, as the teams are inexorably pulled towards enchousen.

But in the top of the 9th Naruto gets one last chance. Yatake with a deep ball to right, it looks gone but the hamakaze knocks it down in front of the wall. He's in with a double a bunt over and the have a runner 90 feet away yet again.

Watanabe hits a hot shot to the right side, but Oota is there once again, almost like the entire game, to make the stop and play at 1st.

PH #10 Hama is hit and #14 Takai replaces him. And then if that wasn't enough Murakami walks Hino to load the bases!

But Kamata hits a blooper to right! Oota and Fukumoto converge, but neither can get to it. One run is in! Fukumoto comes up firing, but his throw is over everything! This as Takai scores and now Hino comes in to score and the error costs them another run! It's 5-2! That's all they get, but it may be enough!

Naruto tries to mount one final rally as Fukumoto gets on base thanks to an error by Fuji. But nothing eve materialized, so as Kamata secures the final out, Naturo has defeated the Haru Koushien champs denying them a chance for a haru-natsu title.

But the writing was on the wall. The easy road through Haru Koushien, the same through the prefecturals. And yet there games where they struggled. This was easily gong to be one of them, and in the end it wasn't enough.Goro Shigenohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13780997342300576882noreply@blogger.com0
